The Good, the Bad, and “Unhinged” starring Russell Crowe
It wasn't easy, but we made it through 2021, folks! It was a tough year for all of us. Social distancing has done a lot to change our daily lives and habits. Everyone had their own way of coping, from taking up new hobbies to adopting puppies. Me? Well, I did adopt a puppy, too, but I also doubled-down on my love for movies more than ever before. Read more [...]
Exquisite Corpses
I noticed an interesting trend when looking at the list of nominations for Best Picture at the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards. Judas and the Black Messiah tells the story of the murder of Fred Hampton and the Black Panther movement of the 1960s through the lens of a crime thriller. Mank tries to recontextualize the narrative behind one of the most Read more [...]
The Wild Bourgeois
"This was going to be my last," Pike Bishop murmurs into his whiskey after a botched robbery of a railroad office results in the decimation of his gang. "I'd like to make one good score and back off." His partner, Dutch, his voice dripping with venom, snaps "Back off to what?" The question hangs ominously in the air as the two friends stare Read more [...]
The Year of Movie-cal Thinking
2020 hasn't been the best year for anyone, and Bobcat Territory was no exception. For the first time since we started the site we went through a multiple month streak of not posting a blogcat. This will be the first one since July. There are a whole bunch of reasons why it became difficult in the latter half of the year to summon the energy to Read more [...]
Why So Unserious?
A few days ago was the 100th day of my self-quarantine. Your mileage may vary, depending on exactly where you live, but all of us are around the same point. At least 3 months of stay-at-home, wearing masks, Zoom calls, and gazing wistfully out windows. The current course of the pandemic makes it seem unlikely that this will change anytime soon.
How Read more [...]

Pong Wins Above Replacement, Part 3
What better way to spend this quarantine than looking at pong statistics? Today, I am going to return again to the idea of "Wins Above Replacement" (WAR) for pong. You may recall a couple of years ago we touched on this topic, but calculating WAR on the level of the team. You can read the two installments on team WAR here:
Pong Wins Above Replacement, Read more [...]
State of the Blogcat
Hard to believe, but we've been exploring Bobcat Territory for almost eight years now. We inaugurated this fine blogcat back on April 20 (natch), 2012. While it's a little early to be celebrating our anniversary, I decided this would be a fine time to take a look over the site and give a little breakdown of how things have been going. For once, Read more [...]
Do I Hear an Eco
The past couple of weeks have seen a burst of think-pieces on the nature of comedy in the post-Trump cultural landscape, sparked by the firing of Shane Gillis from Saturday Night Live only four days after his hiring was announced (a move prompted by public backlash against certain remarks Gillis has made in the past). To some, the comments made Read more [...]

National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, as some of you may have learned from a Google Doodle at some point. Yes, lately it seems as if every single day and month has a dozen different special sobriquets - National Grilled Cheese Day, National Siblings Day, National Jazz Appreciation Month, National Soyfoods Month, and wow I didn't even have to make any Read more [...]
Politics and Recreation
There are a lot of reasons that the current political climate in the United States may have you feeling depressed, pessimistic, downcast, or oppressed. Undeniably the worst thing about the Trump administration is neither the emboldening of racism nor the lingering air of uncertainty and dread, but the effect that this political climate has had Read more [...]
